Evolution of the stud fees or breeding fees...
In the early days of appointment horse breeding, the stud owner often traveled the county breeding mares. Later, mares began traveling to the stallion. On farm breeding was by liver cover whether controlled by handlers or pen or pasture breeding. As time has passed and stallion owners have less expertise and interest in the actual process third parties have often taken over the actual breeding. This has resulted in fees being added to the actual stud fee, farm fees and chute fees as well as veterinary fees. These fees can add up and result in much larger end point charges.
Shipped Semen certainly requires third party fees, but on the farm breeding should not result in unexpected "add ons" unless of course the mare has some medical or uterine problems.
Bottom line, read your contracts carefully because the advertised fee often doesn't resemble your final bill!
